flower shots are usually so cliché, but this one is truly beautiful. the whiteness of the petals immediately caught my attention.

nice digital black and white. what method did you use to transform the colour image into black and white?

now this is how you do it (i thought of this on my own, im hecka proud of myself): go to image>adjustments> selective color in photoshop (i use version eight)... then you choose color you want to be dark in black and white (for instance if you have cyan-colored skies and white clouds, you select cyan from the menu and you start sliding the bars around until you get it the darkest possible blue without making the rest of the image dark) . if you want the clouds to be light you select "nuetrals" from the menu and start playing with those. theres more to do but ill tell you soon...

in my case, the flower was bright orange and the background was greyish blue. if i converted it b&w by going to image>adjustments>gradient map and selecting the black to white gradient, the image will turn out very grey with little amounts of highlights and shadows. so instead, i needed to make the orange flower contrast against the blue background. i when into the selective color thingy and started darkening certain colors, like blues for instance. then i tried to make the orange a little brighter by selecting red from the menu and moving the bars to desired lightness. after your done with that, go to the gradient map thing in the adjustments menu and select the black to white gradient from the pull down menu. then click on the gradient and a window opens with some settings. on the bottom right hand corner of the rectangle with the black to white gradient showing inside of it, there is a white swatch. drag it to the left until there are definite highlights in the image. you can drag the black swatch to the right if you want to make the shadows darker.

you have to play with it a lot to get the right results. your image will have different characteristics, so you will have to use different settings. i hope this helps, and i hope my writing makes sense - i dont want to proof read it.

oohh am i enjoyng this !
thanks a lot for your response, i didn't know that method. here's a link with some other techniques: [link]

the gradient map method is explained in that page but your method is more complex as you make those adjustments with selective colour first...

most people just turn their photos into grayscale when they want a black and white image, which results in low contrast, dull pictures! ;)
